Cooper Prize – People’s Choice Award Winner Announced
13th July 2021
The Cooper Gallery has announced five most popular art works of the Cooper Prize, ‘Peoples’ Choice’ award, as chosen by the public.
The Cooper Prize exhibition launched in March 2021 when the Gallery was closed due to Covid restrictions, during this time visitors could explore the exciting and interesting artwork online.
When the Gallery reopened earlier this year and people were able to visit in person, they were asked to their vote for their favourite using an online poll.
From hundreds of votes submitted, the results were:
1st place – Rachel Lewis – Simply Savoy
2nd place – Ellie May – Barnsley Market Fruit Stall
3rd place – Lucy Dewsnap – For You Mother
4th place – Charlie Wilding – Moonlight
5th place – Jessica Brown – Barn Owl in Flight
Rachel received a basket of art supplies which was kindly donated by Barnsley Museums and Heritage Trust.
The Cooper Prize attracted hundreds of entries from talented artists with links to South Yorkshire. The overall winner of the Cooper Prize was Poseidon by Kieran Ingram
Cllr Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesperson for place at Barnsley Council, said: “The quality of artwork submitted to the Cooper Prize was exceptional and really highlighted the level of talent we have in the region. We were delighted with the response to the ‘People’s Choice’ award and voters’ appreciation of the artwork. Although there was large period of time when the Gallery was closed, through creativity and new technology visitors were still able to see and interact with the artworks. We want to thank the winners and all those who entered the prize for getting involved and making the exhibition such a success.”
