Protect Barnsley’s History Through The South Yorkshire Local Heritage List

10th February 2022

Barnsley is famous for its heritage. It’s packed with stunning historic buildings and locations, but are there some that people can help protect?

The South Yorkshire Local Heritage List is a register of heritage assets that contribute to the distinctiveness and uniqueness of South Yorkshire destinations. Being part of the list ensures the significance of any building, place or site is considered in planning applications that could affect it, or its setting.

Local people, community groups and heritage organisations in Barnsley have been asked to nominate assets to go on the list. They could be historic buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, parks and gardens, historic landscapes or any other heritage assets that are significant to a particular area. These will then be assessed against several criteria and added to the Local List if appropriate. Assets which don’t make it onto the list will still be used to enrich the Historic Environment Record (HER) for South Yorkshire

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: South Yorkshire has an abundance of wonderful heritage that makes it such a special place to live, work and visit. Including some Barnsley’s favourite historical places and objects in The South Yorkshire Local Heritage List is a great way to preserve them.  We know how passionate Barnsley people are about the borough, so we are sure they will have lots of nominations to add to the list!
