The Eldon Street Beast & Blue Plaque Trail

6th December 2022

The Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) joined in with this year’s Bright Nights parade, with an amazing, illuminated puppet of the mythical Eldon Beast. The beast was created by artist Sue Walpole, working with pupils from Trinity Academy St. Edwards.

Thousands of people flocked to see the parade, which journeyed along Eldon Street to the Glassworks Square to mark the end of the brilliant Barnsley Bright Nights winter festival.

The HSHAZ has also installed a trail of alternative heritage plaques ‘the secret blues of Eldon Street’ which was also launched as part of Bright Nights. The plaques were designed by students from Horizon College and tell some of the forgotten stories of Eldon Street and the Victorian Arcade.

The trail will be in place until the end of December and there are 14 plaques to find. You can download the trail map from the Barnsley Museums website right here…
